Repair the failed unit and recheck the work it affects

A repair cycle records a failed check, corrects the responsible unit and rechecks the downstream work made stale by the change. It preserves accepted evidence that remains applicable while keeping new uncertainty and blocked dependencies visible.

Use it when a local defect does not justify a full project restart, or when a small shared change has a wider effect. Choose the boundary from evidence and dependencies, then record the final disposition.

Define the failed unit from the evidence

A repair cycle starts with a reproducible disagreement between the expected and observed state. Identify the claim, field, passage, component, route, graph assertion or process record responsible. The smallest repair is the smallest change that resolves the cause and preserves a valid whole, not necessarily the shortest edit.

Keep the acceptance condition visible

Record the failed check, expected result, observed result, candidate version, context and severity. A page that reads well can still contain a stale graph or broken route. A check that parses one file cannot establish the validity of the full delivered experience.

Do not label all work failed without a dependency reason

A local schema mismatch does not automatically invalidate the research or strategy. A shared source correction can invalidate many pages even if it changes only one field. Use the cause and dependency map to choose the repair boundary, rather than its visual size or the convenience of a full restart.

Repair the responsible source

Trace the defect to the source, mapping, template, content, code, route or state record that controls it. A local patch is appropriate when the cause is local. If the fault returns on regeneration, the responsible unit is likely elsewhere and needs a different diagnosis.

Separate repair from acceptance

Making an edit records an attempted correction. Passing the relevant recheck supports acceptance of the repaired unit within that scope. Required downstream checks or checks on connected components can remain open, and approval for a former version does not automatically cover the revised candidate.

Map the effect of one changed answer

This hypothetical example assumes a page has appropriate markup for its questions and answers under the selected technical setup. An answer changes from A1 to A2 and the content owner accepts A2, but graph G1 still contains the former answer. The identifiers, records and review states are invented. No graph repair, test or publication is reported.

Current draft D2 with accepted answer A2The answer is different from D1; its editorial acceptance is explicitly scoped to D2.Keep the new acceptance evidence and version. If the answer had not been approved, hold final deployment instead of assuming acceptance from its presence in the draft.
Graph G1 containing answer A1The graph now conflicts with the accepted current answer.Mark the affected node or property stale. Correct it from A2, then compare the content and graph again and rerun relevant syntax and meaning checks.
Assembled package P1 using an older combinationA package prepared for D1/G1 does not identify the current D2 and repaired graph.Assemble a revised package with its exact component versions. Verify the delivered composition rather than reusing P1’s approval label.
Release evidence R1 for the former candidateThe changed answer and graph can affect the scope of prior approval or tests.Reopen affected content, graph, rendering or release checks. Retain unrelated results only when their assumptions remain valid and the new candidate record explains that reuse.
Unrelated accepted page U1It has no dependency on the changed answer or shared mapping in this example.Leave it intact. A local repair does not require repeating unrelated work, unless later diagnosis identifies a broader shared cause.

The proposed correction is to update the stale graph from the accepted answer, verify their supported meaning and assemble the revised publishing candidate. The example does not imply that every page needs question markup or that consistency guarantees a search feature. It shows why accepted source work can survive while graph and release states need new evidence.

Keep the repair and invalidation record together

A useful repair log explains what failed, what changed and what must be checked again. Preserve the old and new versions, evidence, owner and unresolved state. Removing those details turns a bounded correction into another undocumented change.

Trace the repaired source through the outputs and owners that consume it.

Failing unit and check evidence

Identify the exact claim, field, passage, component, route or graph assertion. Retain the failed test, expected and observed result, severity, URL or artifact version and relevant environment. Record uncertainty when the cause is still under investigation.

Repair action and responsible owner

Describe the precise attempted change and the source or technical owner who controls it. Keep the reason for expanding or narrowing the boundary. Do not rewrite unrelated accepted content merely to make the output look newly produced.

Invalidation map

List downstream modules, files, links, graph assertions, packages, tests and approvals whose inputs changed. Record why each one is stale or still applicable. A dependency can be invalidated without deleting its former accepted record.

Scope, state and next action

Keep source pointers, observation dates, market, version, effective period and limitations. Name the accountable reviewer, repair state, missing dependency, next check and condition for closing or escalating. A downstream owner’s availability cannot make failed work current.

Keep the former candidate and the new retest record with the repair history.

Retest the failed condition before closing the cycle

Rerun the failed check on the repaired unit, then the dependent checks whose assumptions changed. Include checks on connected components or checks on the delivered page when the repair can affect them. Keep the former evidence as history and bind the new result to the revised candidate.

  1. Isolate and preserve the failure. Keep the relevant candidate, source and observation. Identify the smallest responsible unit and apply any required hold to the affected output while it is unresolved.
  2. Change the cause or the tested assumption. Make the bounded repair from supported evidence. If an attempted correction fails again, reconsider the source, diagnosis, method or boundary instead of repeatedly applying the same edit under unchanged conditions.
  3. Verify the repaired unit and its consumers. Reproduce the original test, record the new result and rerun the affected dependency path. Confirm the assembled package and visible output when those can differ from the saved component.
  4. Stop or escalate when the route is exhausted. Use the project’s agreed limit and stop earlier when missing evidence, access, permission or an unresolved source prevents a valid repair. Mark the blocked dependency and assign the next owner. Do not invent a passing state to keep production moving.
  5. Deliver the supported portion with an exact resume point. Retain accepted upstream work, the failed and attempted versions, open findings and the furthest supported output. State the phase, missing input and check where work should resume. Final release remains held when its required dependency is unresolved.

A limit on repair attempts is a local operating rule, not a universal number of retries. More attempts are useful only when the diagnosis, evidence or method changes enough to test a new explanation. Escalation preserves supported work while making the unresolved boundary explicit.

Questions about repair and renewed checks

Must a failed check restart the entire project?

No. Trace the failure and its dependencies. Retain accepted work whose evidence and assumptions remain valid; reopen the units and downstream states affected by the change.

Can a small edit require broad retesting?

Yes. A shared source, template or identity correction can affect many outputs. The number of changed characters does not measure the dependency scope.

Does passing the repaired unit finish acceptance?

Only for the condition and scope checked. Checks on connected components, rendering, source consistency or release approval can still need review on the revised candidate.

What happens after repeated failed attempts?

Reconsider the cause, method or boundary. When the agreed route is exhausted or blocked by missing evidence or access, escalate with the supported portion and exact resume point instead of repeating the same unsuccessful action.

Does a repaired page guarantee search outcomes?

No. The cycle controls correction, evidence and acceptance states. It does not guarantee indexing, rankings, search features, traffic or conversions.

Related decisions and source reading

The invalidation map is hypothetical and does not report a performed repair, check or release. Its example of markup for questions assumes an appropriate selected technical setup; vocabulary correctness, current search feature rules and the delivered result require their own evidence. The local repair policy does not replace those checks.
